"I had just returned from several months in Europe.
There was something about the spread of time and history in those places that I had visited that permanently imprinted
itself upon my mind. As I had traveled, the impression of a feeling
of continuity and belonging built into a solid feeling, as if a
feeling can be described as solid. This has remained with me, the
feeling that to enhance our own understanding of our own individual
place in the human continuum we must each of us journey to those
places that have helped shape our beliefs and ideals.
As much as I have learned a great deal from the solitude of the
deserts and mountains of the southwestern US, and felt a kinship
with nature, in Europe, I felt a kinship with history."
