Will Johnstone, American Artist: The Uncertainty Principle, with Hale-Bopp, March-April, 1997

The Uncertainty Principle, with Hale-Bopp, March-April, 1997
48" x 24" Acrylic on Canvas

"The Sandia and the Manzano Mountains rise to the east above Albuquerque, New Mexico, above Sandia Base, at that time home of the Atomic Energy Commission and transplants from the nuclear labs at Los Alamos.

The Uncertainty Principle, original version, was painted in 1986 to depict the idea in physics that the unlimited universe is defined by the limits of the perceiver, thus the sky can be solid and the mountains can be space filled with planets and all the vagaries of the universe.

Hale-Bopp intruded in 1997. It was only a speck, but it made the sky a little less solid."
